Ice dams are ridges of hardened snow that forms on the gutter of a slanting roof. This ridge tends to trap melting snow and keeps the snow or water from draining off the roof through the gutter and to the ground.

If ice dams form, water will build up on the roof and leak into the home. When it begins to thaw, water can leak into small cracks and freeze. If it freezes in these cracks, it can expand and cause serious damages. It can cause plaster removal, chipping pain, decay, and mold growth.
